Singing to a new tune

YOGA CONVERTS: Former lead guitarist of 60s rock band The Animals Antion Meredith, known previously as Vic Briggs, and wife Elandra, former model and actress, will feature at an upcoming yoga festival in Albany.

He was a rock superstar and she was a screen siren in a string of vampire movies back in the 60s.

Now living quietly on the Hibiscus Coast, the couple is dedicated to the ancient art of yoga after leaving high-flying careers behind in the late 70s.

Antion Meredith, formerly The Animals’ lead guitarist Vic Briggs, and wife Elandra will feature at the inaugural Kawai Purapura International Yoga Festival in Albany tomorrow until Sunday.

The accomplished guitarist has worked alongside Eric Burdon, Dusty Springfield and the Beach Boys and channels his talent into what he calls “sound yoga” using sacred Indian music for spiritual empowerment.

Mr Meredith had a spiritual epiphany while working as a music producer in Hollywood.

“I became tired of the politics of the music business and the shallowness of it. You were only regarded for your success and not for who you really were as a person.

“It really started to get to me. I was using drugs a lot to cope and to have experiences of raised consciousness,” he says.

“When I found yoga the need for drugs fell away and I found I could have those transcending experiences without them.”

Mr Meredith then moved to London where he began teaching yoga, explored Sikhism and immersed himself in the study of sacred Indian music.

He says it was there he fell in love with “a gorgeous model and actress” who had become a regular at his classes.

They have been married for more than 40 years and hold two regular classes, Living Love Kundalini Yoga and Naad Yoga, at the Kawai Purapura yoga retreat in Albany.

The couple say yoga is a powerful tool that could be used to combat the prevalence of stress and suicide in New Zealand.

“It’s not just a matter of turning your body into a pretzel or upside down,” Mrs Meredith says.

“The body loves for you to love it and a lot of emotional healing can be done using yoga,” she says.

They moved to New Zealand in 2008 having taught in the United Kingdom, California and Hawaii, and have found the yoga community here is not as “tragically hip” as overseas.

“In America it is very trendy and people are always looking around to see how everybody else is going and what yoga clothes they’re wearing,” Mr Meredith says.

“We ask people to close their eyes during our classes. It shouldn’t be about that, it should be about being within yourself and finding spiritual truth.”

A story of love, yoga and vampires

By Ali Ikram

Kawai Purapura retreat on Auckland’s North Shore will play host to an international yoga festival this weekend.

Many yoga devotees can attest to its life changing power but two people say their lives have been changed more than most.

Antion and Elandra Meredith’s is a story about love and yoga.

“One night right after Christmas 1971 I was there to teach a class and only one person showed up and you know these romance books where they say all the forces of heaven and earth pushed them together it was like that it really was it was incredible what happened,” yoga teacher Mr Meredith says.

That was after he had studiously ignored Elandra in yoga class for six months.

This was easier said than done because not only was she a sought after model in London, but also starred in a trilogy of erotic vampire movies that are today considered cult classics.

But it was the music Mr Meredith played during class, that he still plays when they teach today that won over the Danish born, New Zealand raised beauty.

“The music he played, the sacred music he played, it played in my head every night,” Mrs Meredith says.

“So my life of fame and fortune and stars… first movie was Roger Moore, Tony Curtis and all kinds of famous people, it started to pale in comparison.”

Back in 1966 a young American guitarist called Jimi Hendrix came to London and at his first big gig he plugged into an amp owned by Vic Briggs who played for the animals.

In interviews Hendrix would list Briggs as one of his three favourite guitarists.

And it turns out Mr Meredith is Vic Briggs, but turned his back on playing with some of the biggest names in pop after becoming disillusioned with the music business.

“I just started praying, I decided I was going to meditate. I didn’t know how to meditate I just sat down and meditated and I worked out it was 40 days and after 40 days a miracle happened – I was fired from capital records.”

And New Zealand also has a special place in his transformation.

It was here in 1967 while touring with The Animals he first took LSD in Rotorua.

While he cites that as the beginning of his spiritual journey Mr and Mrs Meredith say if you have yoga you do not need drugs.

“It just wasn’t necessary and when we started doing yoga it was obvious that we could transform our consciousness with yoga.”

“The base condition of a human being should be love but the way civilisation treats us, it all gets squeezed out of us so we seek alternatives when you can connect to the love that’s inside ourselves you don’t need these things.”

As for their former lives of stardom they say have not given them a second thought – happily living here for the last four years

The couple celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary in two weeks time.

The coming together in celebration of community and sharing of gifts,
knowledge, information and spontaneity of …what is Wisdom?

This open, light hearted discussion invites listeners to join in an event
that brings forth a collective of metaphysicians, healers, artists and
indigenous ecological ideals of how as one seamless organism we can anchor
a vision of an open, bio harmonic lifestyle and community.

With a holistic understanding that integrates scientific principles people
are awakening to the need to creatively build community into a dynamic
field of possibility. And that ‘cultural creative’s’ need to be communing

What are these foundations? – These platonic building blocks are of how we
individually and collectively weave the various strands of our potential
into a localized Auckland area group that will empower us to manifest
answers, solutions and connection for today and tomorrow.

And how does Kawai Purapura as a venue in a glade of exquisite beauty,
facilitate a unique event such as this to be the forerunner of
spontaneity, joy and heart resonant connection and well being?

Where we can embrace new friends, kindred spirits and  change-agents and
celebrate, meditate, pray and play, sing and soar.

It’s Valentine’s Day! ! !

It’s Valentine’s Day, the birthday of my husband and our 2 daughters!  I write to express – and to go public! – with my gratitude, appreciation and joy for  the LOVE that they are:

I want to honour Antion. My husband of almost 40 years. I want to acknowledge and appreciate: his Love.  His commitment. His authenticity. His devotion to spirituality and personal growth – through terrible times. I am awestruck by his  impeccability and disciplined practising of a chanting and singing sadhana almost 24/7. I am amazed by his determined commitment to work to set about healing himself of lifelong depression, and his deserved brilliant success!  I am awed by the success of his creation of a healing system to help others! (who struggle with similar longstanding problems).  I thrill in utmost awe when his riveting Hawaiian chanting rarifies the atmosphere while opening a doorway to spirit. He is an awesome master of transformation, he lives it, he walks his talk. As for his music, I am a madly, wildly enthusiastic fan of his magnificent transformational music that sings in my soul for 40 years. When he sings songs to me, sometimes silly ones, I love it, I smile, giggle and dance. We adore each other. I am absolutely crazy about him and my heart and soul is in ecstasy to share life with him.

Today, Valentine’s Day, is the birthday of our first daughter Pritam. Her name means Love, Beloved, and she lives up to it. Anyone who earns her attention and love is blessed beyond belief. What an honor to be her mother. I can’t even begin to sing her praises to do her justice. And the word ‘justice’ is apropos for her: her childhood teachers spoke of her razor-sharp orientation for fairness and justice. Woe betide anyone who is the recipient of her scorn and finds themselves the target of her withering words, the  berating usually on behalf or in defence of some discriminated-against or  conned victim. Her wisdom is such she would have made a great ruler of a great nation. A straight-A student, she majored in politics, almost became a lawyer, her talent was recognized  in the world of banking and economics, but  luckily she escaped both to instead shine her light for the benefit of many grateful fitness enthusiasts and athletes who admire her, rave about her and love her.  When her sister was born on her third  birthday she reached out her little arms to her and held her with so much love as if she were welcoming a long lost friend. Her perfect handwriting is a reflection of her impeccably responsible, royal and noble soul. Her husband is the deserving recipient of her fiercely passionate loyalty, which story brings tears to your eyes. She is also absolutely gorgeous. Watch out world!

Today, Valentine’s Day, is the birthday of our  youngest daughter Siri Lakshmi. I want to honor her and appreciate her. She is a brilliant soul of great Love, huge intellect, intelligence and vast compassion. Her name means ‘great Goddess of wealth and abundance’, and true to form and name, she sports the qualities of  prudence, elegance and good taste in abundance, and manages somehow to be always very well off in the financial department, to the great admiration of many. She was born into this earth as a planned for and chosen being. The day before her birth someone said “When are you due? I replied with conviction: “Tomorrow.” And thus it was, at 2.30am, (on her father’s and sister’s birthday, Valentine’s Day), she woke me up out of a deep sleep and beautiful dream, (unbelievably no birthing labour), just leaping out in the world already smiling, laughing and vibing “Here I am ha-ha!!” Extraordinarily cute, adorable and delightfully funny as a child – and to this day, – everybody loves her. Born under hugely challenging astrological and numerological aspects with a finely honed instinct for seeing through the world’s hypocrisy, along with a well-tuned compass for truth, her life has not always been easy. In fact, what she has forged her way through, in the process of finding herself, reminds me of  the fairy stories of old, the initiations with the challenges, the mountains to scale, the monsters to slay, and the underworld of heart breaking pain. And like in the fairy tales, what she has succeeded in overcoming has given her character and power like you can’t believe! Like a diamond being formed by pressure of carbon, she has emerged as a brilliant, utterly delightful, radiant, humorous and scintillating woman. I want to write a book about her! I rejoice and am so honoured to be her mother, and so proud and happy at all her inner and outer successes. She inspires me, there is nothing she can’t achieve in her life of Love, and my heart is huge as I think of her.
